Chemins de Fer Luxembourgeois to Offer WiFi on All Trains

All trains, trams and stations in Luxembourg will have free Internet connectivity by the end of this year, the government has promised. In addition, free WiFi on all buses should be available “soon after”.

The capital city’s tram network will begin testing on-board Internet service this month and the entire network should be fitted out by the end of 2024. According to local press reports, the tram WiFi roll-out will cost less than €100,000.

Meanwhile, the Grand Duchy’s train network, which spans 270km of track, is set to see WiFi access on all trains. The operator, Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Luxembourgeois (CFL), has long been testing WiFi on a number of its routes and with the arrival of a new €400 million fleet of 34 trains, on-board passenger WiFi access will be made available everywhere.

The new trains will come with a “modern WiFi system” as well as a passenger counting system. By the end of this year free WiFi will also be available at all 70 CFL train stations.

The coalition government that took office in November, agreed it would deploy free internet connections on all of Luxembourg’s rail lines, train stations, buses, trams and related stops during its five-year term of office.
